What’s a Renewable Energy Credit?
When you activate a solar energy system, you’re not just generating electricity — you’re also creating Solar Renewable Energy Credits, or SRECs. These credits represent the environmental value of the clean energy your system produces. For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours your system generates, you earn one SREC.
So, why haven’t most homeowners seen a dime from these credits? While SREC markets have been around for years, they were primarily built for big utilities and corporations — not individual homeowners. In short, there hasn’t been a straightforward or secure way for residential solar owners to track their SREC production, much less sell them, until now.
Introducing Brytr
Brytr is a software platform that gives homeowners direct access to the SREC marketplace — securely and with no extra equipment required.
Once you register for a free Brytr account, the platform walks you through a process to connect your solar inverter (with your permission) in order to track your clean energy production. Every time you generate one megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar power, Brytr mints a certified REC on your behalf.
You can then redeem these RECs for cash or gift cards right from withing the Brytr platform. An average residential solar system generates 5–10 RECs per year, translating to potential earnings of up to $250 annually, but this can go much higher, depending on market conditions and system size. And keep in mind that your system is already generating these credits. The only difference is that Brytr allows you to monetize them.
